British Species

My research on wasps at Southampton University involved the two commonest species in  England: the Common Wasp Vespula vulgaris, and the German Wasp Vespula germanica.

My thesis is entitled ‘Chemical Communication in British Social Wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)’

It was recently digitised by Southampton University Library and made available to the general public to read in electronic format. It can be accessed by clicking this link:

The thirteen species of social wasp currently recorded in the UK are listed below, each with a hyperlink to its entry in the National Biodiversity Network website. Clicking on one of these links will take you to an interactive map showing all recent records of occurrence. There are also photos of each species and a brief description.

At the time of my research (1976 – 1980), there were just seven species of social wasps living in the UK:

  1. European Hornet Vespa crabro (Link to map: Vespa crabro : Hornet | NBN Atlas)
  2. Common Wasp Vespula vulgaris (Link to map: Vespula vulgaris : Common Wasp | NBN Atlas)
  3. German Wasp Vespula germanica (Link to map: Vespula germanica : German Wasp | NBN Atlas)
  4. Red Wasp Vespula rufa (Link to map: Vespula rufa : Red Wasp | NBN Atlas)
  5. Cuckoo Wasp Vespula austriaca (Link to map: Vespula austriaca : Cuckoo Wasp | NBN Atlas)
  6. Tree Wasp Dolichovespula sylvestris (Link to map: Dolichovespula sylvestris : Tree Wasp | NBN Atlas)
  7. Norwegian Wasp Dolichovespula norwegica (Link to map: Dolichovespula norwegica : Norwegian Wasp | NBN Atlas)

Since those days, a number of other species of social wasps have colonised Britain, probably as a result the accidental import of fertilised hibernating queens by cross-Channel traffic. The new species are:

  1. Asian Hornet Vespa velutina (Link to map: Vespa velutina : Asian Hornet | NBN Atlas)
  2. Oriental Hornet Vespa orientalis (Link to map: Vespa orientalis | NBN Atlas)
  3. Median or Killer Wasp Dolichovespula media (Link to map: Dolichovespula media | NBN Atlas)
  4. Saxon Wasp Dolichovespula saxonica (Link to map: Dolichovespula saxonica | NBN Atlas)
  5. European Paper Wasp Polistes dominula (Link to map: Polistes dominula | NBN Atlas)
  6. Polistes nimpha (Link to map: Polistes nimpha | NBN Atlas)
